Our marriage became further strained, as my wife apparently still wanted additional children. I underwent a reversal of the vasectomy, and soon thereafter, my wife was pregnant with our third healthy child. After six years, I was becoming dissatisfied with work because I didn’t feel I had adequate support from my group or the hospital. After a brief job search, certainly hindered by my alcohol consumption, I returned to the large academic practice where I trained. Sometimes not even celebrities recognize their struggles. You become part of the Herren Wellness family. I feel like a human being again, and it’s been a long time since I felt that way. It’s because of the Herren Wellness community and the support I get. I had someone I was at Herren Wellness with come up from New Jersey for my one-year celebration there, and that meant to the world to me. I was in a meeting with Chris one day – and I’ve mentioned I love sports – and he told me that it’s like it is the 4th quarter and I’m down 40 points and I need my best team with me. I felt like I went to bed at 18 years old and woke up at 40 in treatment with five children and a raging drug and alcohol problem.

Speaking with Katie, the first thing you’ll notice about her is her confidence. She spoke like she wasn’t afraid of anything, but her story of recovery proved she didn’t always exude the same fearlessness. “My therapist introduced me to my first sponsor who sent me to my first 12 step meeting. There was something about the people there that I couldn’t put my finger on that kept me going.
I would like to thank Living Amends for the chance they gave me with the scholarship to sober living. This scholarship will help me in so many ways, as my family has finally set the boundary that they will no longer enable or support my risky and self-destructive behavior. Finally, for once in my life, I had to rely upon God that after treatment at Ascension, my housing would be covered for sober living as long as I continued to do the next right thing.
We found strength in accepting that we couldn’t make him stop his drug use but we could offer him support for anything related to his sobriety. Those are traits with a double-edged sword that can lend themselves to a disposition to substance abuse, but they’ve also allowed me to lead an exciting, adventurous life. They also make me a great entrepreneur, business owner, and leader in general. I’d also never give up the personal growth I’ve experienced in the last year. I was ecstatic when I found out that I got it. Craig finally found the support he needed at Gateway. But Gateway’s personalized treatment approach gave him the freedom to choose therapies and strategies that did work and enabled him to take ownership of the recovery process.
- I felt very little joy (forget about hope), and felt anxious, controlling, and fearful most of the time.
